How to Compress a PDF While Controlling Quality
Large PDF files slow down email attachments, fill up cloud storage, and frustrate anyone who has to download them. GoPDFConverter inspects safely reachable image resources, recompresses supported images when the result is smaller, and preserves unsupported, masked, or color-managed images unchanged. The entire process runs locally in your browser, so document bytes are not sent to a conversion server.

Why Compress PDFs in Your Browser
Most popular web-based PDF compressors upload your file to a remote server. That model creates exposure you cannot inspect directly: the file may be logged, cached, scanned, or retained according to a third party's controls. For tax forms, medical records, or legal contracts, local processing removes that server-upload step.
GoPDFConverter compresses supported image resources and rewrites the PDF locally with browser-side codecs and PDF-LIB. Resources that cannot be decoded or replaced safely remain unchanged. Your file is read locally, eligible images are processed on your CPU, and the result downloads from browser memory.
Local processing also skips the upload, server queue, and download round-trip. Actual processing time depends on the PDF's size and image content, plus the memory and CPU available on your device.
Compression Presets Explained
- Light: minimal size reduction with essentially zero visible change. Best for documents you plan to print, or when you want to trim file size without touching image quality.
- Balanced: the recommended preset for most PDFs. It recompresses images moderately while aiming to preserve on-screen readability.
- Maximum: applies the strongest available downsampling and recompression. It often produces the smallest of the three presets, with visible quality loss on some images.
Results vary widely. Image-rich documents such as scanned textbooks, photo portfolios, and presentation slides often offer the most room for reduction. A text-heavy PDF that already uses efficient fonts and streams may shrink very little.
Advanced Compression and Target Size Controls
Advanced controls let you set the lowest permitted JPEG quality and a maximum pixel dimension for an eligible image's long edge. The optional target is measured per PDF. GoPDFConverter tries at most six deterministic candidates, starting with higher fidelity and never exceeding the strongest quality and downsampling limits you selected.
Exact placed-image DPI downsampling is intentionally disabled in this browser engine. A single PDF image can be reused at several physical sizes or transformed inside a form, so treating its pixel dimensions as one page DPI could reduce the wrong use. CMYK and ICC-based images, masks and alpha, decode transforms, unknown filter chains, annotations, forms, and attachments are preserved rather than approximated. Digitally signed PDFs are returned byte-for-byte because any rewrite would invalidate the signature.
